Always measure the interior clearance between the two case lugs where the spring bar rests. Never measure the outside width of the case horns or the buckle end of an existing strap.
Timepieces with 19mm or 21mm lugs (e.g. Rolex Submariner 41, Grand Seiko Shunbun, Cartier Santos Large) require exact odd-sized straps. Squeezing a 20mm or 22mm strap risks damaging the leather and jamming spring bars.
Standard dress timepieces use 1.5mm–1.8mm spring bars. Heavy-duty dive watches like the Seiko SKX and Turtle use “fat” 2.5mm spring bars that require enlarged strap tunnels.
