Lug width (also called horn spacing or strap clearance) is the distance in millimeters between the interior walls of the two watch lugs. To measure, insert the inside jaws of a digital caliper between the lugs parallel to the 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock position. For 21mm timepieces, the interior measurement will read 21.0mm.
Most watch straps in the mass market are manufactured in even widths (18mm, 20mm, 22mm). Brands like Rolex (Submariner 41, Datejust 41), Grand Seiko (Shunbun SBGA413), and Cartier (Santos Large) deliberately employ 21mm lugs for ideal visual case balance. Using a true 21mm strap eliminates awkward gaps or leather pinching.
